Only one dog can win best in show at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, and this year the honor went to Sage, a spectacularly coifed miniature poodle whose main-character energy was hard to ignore. Outside the Guggenheim Bilbao in northern Spain, Jeff Koons’ much-loved flower 1992 sculpture “Puppy,” shows how Pop art — that high kick of counter-intuitive artistic expression so often equated with the 1960s — never really went away. Efruz is a 4-year-old Jack Russell terrier and he is a common sight these hot days of the Southern Hemisphere summer. “He loves the sea,” says his owner, Mauro Canella, a surfing instructor at the beach in San Bartolo, a district 50 kilometers (30 miles) from downtown Lima. And they are not the only dog-human duo surfing the waves off San Baartolo. As happens to all surfers, dog and owner occasionally are tumbled into the water when they fail to negotiate a wave.

Under a set of railway arches in the Haggerston neighborhood of East London, a pack of clay dogs was ready to be brought to life. A Boston terrier and a cockapoo were among the pack, the work of the ceramist Alice Johnson, who makes bespoke sculptures of people’s beloved animals through her business, Pottery Pets. “I feel sort of very lucky that that’s my job,” said Ms. Johnson, 29, who had the small dachshund she was dog-sitting curled up on her lap. “I hope that it’s something that they will treasure forever — that’s sort of the whole point.”Ms. Johnson was studying illustration at the University of Brighton when she began experimenting with air-drying clay, which doesn’t need to be fired in a kiln, and, during a summer holiday, completed a three-day pottery course that included making clay versions of her two pet spaniels. LONDON (AP) — British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Friday described American XL Bully dogs as a “danger to our communities” and announced plans to ban the breed following a public outcry after a series of recent attacks. Sunak said he has asked government ministers to bring together police and canine experts to legally define the characteristics of the American XL Bully, which is not recognized as a breed by groups such as the Kennel Club in Britain or the American Kennel Club in the United States. “The American XL Bully dog is a danger to our communities, particularly our children,’’ Sunak said. Some campaigners have called for the American XL Bully, which was originally bred from the American pit bull terrier, to be added to the list because they believe dangerous characteristics have been bred into the animals. The XL Bully is not recognized as a breed by the U.K.’s Kennel Club, which has argued that no breed of dog is inherently dangerous.
